SMOKE ALARMS

Changes to smoke alarm compliance in Queensland was outlined in 2017 and spans over ten years in various phases.

The first phase outlined that all Queensland residences must be fitted with interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, hallways and on each level in a multi-level home. Subsequently, all houses and units approved for building or substantial renovations after 1 January 2017 must comply.

In the second stage, as of the 1 January 2022, all houses or units being sold, leased, or having existing leases renewed, must meet compliance requirements.

The final stage outlines that all other dwellings must comply with this legislation by 1 January 2027.

What are the requirements?

  • Alarms must be photoelectric only

  • Alarms must be either hard wired to the electricity supply and be installed by a licensed electrician, or a non-removable 10yr Lithium battery powered alarm type.

  • Alarms installed in all bedrooms, hallways leading to bedrooms and on all levels of the house.

  • Must be interconnected fire alarms - should one alarm be triggered, all alarms will follow.
